GIB’s “Beauty and the Beach” Clean-Up Day on Nurana Island a big success

Scores of environmental enthusiasts, families and children from various schools across the kingdom joined GIB’s employees at “Beauty and the Beach” clean-up day under clear blue skies at Nurana Island Beach yesterday.

The ecological activity was organised as part of the bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility Programme ‘WAGIB’; and was held in partnership with the Capital Municipality Council, Gulf City Cleaning Company and the Bahrain Beachcombers.

A steel sculpture figure especially custom-built by “Out of the Box” agency for the event was displayed on the beach and used as a landmark litter collection point to raise awareness on environmental pollution. Local graffiti artists Kojak (Instagram @kojak.73), Rn2on (Instagram @rn2on), EKS016e (Instagram @016er) and Huvil (Instagram @huvil) painted 24 bins that will stay on the beach permanently to increase their usage and help create a long term effect on the cleanliness of the beach. Children enjoyed an informative giant game of snakes and ladders with environmental questions.

Children, parents and teachers from the British School of Bahrain, Nadeen International School and St Christopher’s School joined in the clean-up day. The British School of Bahrain’s children set up an Eco-Stall to educate and promote sustainability and the three R's of the environment: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.  The school’s environmental ambassadors - the Eco-Rangers – were present to promote and share their work with the others.

Mr. Abdulaziz Al-Helaissi, GIB’s CEO, commented: “GIB and our employees are committed to taking care of the environment and improving our surroundings. The beach clean-up was the second environmental activity organised by GIB this year, following a Tree Planting initiative to commemorate the World Earth Day in April. Working together with our partners and groups of volunteers GIB demonstrates its dedication to the environment. By joining forces we can achieve long term changes in environmental behaviour in Bahrain.”

Launched last year, GIB’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Programme ‘WAGIB’ is committed to supporting local communities in which it operates with a range of sustainable development programmes and local initiatives. ‘WAGIB’ emphasises themes with long-term positive results in the fields of youth and career development, women’s empowerment, health awareness, and protection of the environment.
